If you feel college festivals are all about fun, lark, dancing, eating, meeting new people from other colleges, participating in events, star performances and all that, then just hold on. Let’s take a step back! What takes to bring in all these ingredients in a fest? What goes on behind the scenes?
Given that every college these days hosts its annual fest, it takes a great deal of blood, sweat and toil in making a fest ‘good’, ‘unique’ and ‘laudable’. Arranging a fest ranges from deciding on a theme, to setting the budget, managing sponsorships, inviting guests, performers, organizing events and a lot more. So, where does it all start from?
Formation and composition of a core Infusion Committee
It all begins with forming of a core committee wherein the graduating batch hands over the responsibilities to the upcoming batch. The members are selected on the basis of their efforts put in, in the previous year’s fest. This happens a year prior to the fest, so you can imagine the enthusiasm for the fest. The best thing about a B – School fest is that it is entirely student driven. Right from contacting the special guests, to managing the creative and logistics part, there’s a separate team for each of the task who burn the midnight oil for making the fest ‘Exceptional’, ‘Enthralling’ and ‘Exciting’.
College festivals are also a coming together of the different clubs and committees. The various academic clubs like marketing, finance and operations organize the management events; the sports and cultural committees help in organizing a plethora of sports and cultural events whereas the mess committee coordinates logistics and cuisine management. So, the credit for an extraordinary fest cannot be attributed only to the core committee members alone. Coordination plays a big role here, with all the constituents making contributions.
Organizing a fest is unquestionably not a T-20 match. Given that IIM Rohtak follows a credit system, missing a single class means losing out on the important grade point in that subject. However, the students manage to put up a fantastic show despite this firmness in class timings and this all depends on their time management skills.
As is justly said in the business world, everyone is rewarded in two components: cash and experience. Take the experience first; the cash will follow. This sense of responsibility is what gives the students a feeling of satisfaction and keeps their spirits high.
As it is rightly said, “Individuals play the game, but teams beat the odds”, the same is the case with Infusion too. Teamwork kicks off from the first day of the preparations. It is the right team work that brings out the best decisions. Team management, work allocation, coordination, reporting, attracting footfall, time management, sponsors etc., are some of the major aspects of fest management and students plan out various means to make the coordination and planning easier.
The entire team of Infusion is divided into verticals like – Creative, Sponsorship, Finance, Promotion, Public Relations and Logistics. Every vertical takes its own decisions but do run it up by the other teams in the weekly team meets, which are very crucial.
The magnanimity and uniqueness of a fest is generally determined by the cardinality of events in a fest as well as the prize money being awarded. The events provide an excellent platform for students to showcase their skills.
Infusion invites students from b-schools as well as other colleges to participate. So, it’s a good platform for networking as well. The prize money is also quite huge and often ranges from a few thousands to PPI offers from the sponsoring companies.
The Ultimate Carnival
All’s well that ends well. After deciding on the events, arranging sponsors and inviting guests, it becomes imperative to be able to manage the huge crowd. After all, that is what makes Infusion stand apart from the rest – entertainment layered with hospitality.
Organizing a fest at such a colossal scale requires a lot of patience. One of the biggest issues is maintaining and keeping in control such a huge crowd, especially during the concert time. This year we have the famous band, “The Local Train” performing at Infusion along with Murray Molloy, the renowned Irish sword swallower.
However, almost all the students from the organising committee agree unanimously that there is an excellent scope to gather a lot of practical experience by being a part of Infusion.
We welcome you all to the annual fest of IIM Rohtak, Infusion’18 on 13th and 14th January 2018 to experience this ‘Exceptional’, ‘Enthralling’ and ‘Exciting’ extravaganza.
